Community spirit serves veterans and their families on National Service Day
SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Sept. 06, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Sept. 06, 2024 – In honor of the incredible resilience and compassion shown around the world since 9/11, Endeavors, with the help of volunteers and community partners, will work with Meals on Wheels San Antonio to provide meals and highly requested self-care items to older veteran and military spouse clients. Additionally, Endeavors staff at locations outside of San Antonio will donate warm winter clothing to One Warm Coat and letters of encouragement to deployed troops through Soldier’s Angels.
According to The Washington Post, on September 11thNumberIn November 2001, the United States was forced to close its airspace, resulting in 38 planes grounding at Gander International Airport in Newfoundland, Canada, stranding approximately 7,000 travelers from over 100 countries in a small town of 10,000 people whose infrastructure was not built to accommodate such a rapid population growth.
Despite these obstacles, the people of Gander set up cots in their schools, churches, meeting rooms and even their own homes. Bakers produced bread wherever they could, and they also cared for the approximately 20 dogs and cats and two great apes that were on board the plane.
This inspiring story encapsulates Endeavors’ drive to serve. As the largest veterans service provider in the state of Texas, the organization is proud to provide access to mental health resources, emergency housing and employment assistance, disaster relief and recovery services, and more. Dedicated to extending a helping hand to every individual at every stage of life, the nonprofit is pleased to partner with an organization that has been doing the same for nearly 50 years.
“This is our second year partnering with Meals on Wheels of San Antonio to support our veteran and military spouse clients. We are honored to work with great community partners like HEB and WellMed to give back to those who have given so much to us,” said Elizabeth Higgins, associate director of philanthropy for Endeavors. “In the spirit of community service and human connection born after the events of 9/11, we look forward to spreading love and compassion to our heroes this fall.”
“We’re grateful to Endeavors and their community partners for prioritizing the veterans and spouses we support on this National Day of Service,” said Vincent Faris, CEO of Meals on Wheels San Antonio. “We support some of the most vulnerable yet amazing people, people who shouldn’t be forgotten because most of society doesn’t see them every day. When we ring their doorbell, they know the community cares about them, and that’s what makes what we do so special.”
